Mustangs Gearing Up For Spring Campaigns

Despite the recent heavy rains, athletes at Oakdale High School are in the early stages of the spring sports season. With scrimmages and practices getting into a rhythm, there are plenty of teams prepping for action. Here is a glance at the Mustang sports that will finish out the school year.

 

Boys Tennis

Grant Miller returns to the court as the team’s head coach. On Tuesday, Feb. 19 the boys were scheduled to hit the road for their lone scrimmage of the season at Ceres. The boys open the Valley Oak League season at East Union on Tuesday, March 5. All league matches are scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

 

Track And Field

Oakdale will host Escalon for their lone scrimmage of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. This year’s County Meet will be held at Turlock on Friday, March 8 at 3 p.m. The regular season is scheduled to start on Thursday, March 14 when the team hosts Central Catholic at 3:30 p.m.

It takes many coaches to help make the squad successful and this season the staff includes Guy Fowler, Mike Bacigalupi, Brett Chappell, Ron Rieger, Lori Vargas, Shane Caris, Vic Moreno, Ron Clinkenbeard and Daniel Linder.

 

Swimming

Oakdale jumps right into action this Friday, Feb. 22 when they host Manteca at 3:30 p.m.

The Mustangs will also host their annual March Madness Invite on Saturday, March 9 at 9 a.m. The varsity team is coached by Russ Van Cleave along with assistant coaches Savannah Martin and Ron Thompson and the junior varsity coach is Melissa Meyer.

 

Boys Golf

Oakdale’s golf boys hit the links this week with a pair of scrimmages. On Tuesday, Feb. 19 they were slated to host Valley Oak League opponent Kimball in a scrimmage. Thursday, Feb. 21 the team is scheduled to host Escalon at Oakdale Golf and Country Club with a 3:15 p.m. start time. Oakdale’s first league match is set for Monday, Feb. 25 for the VOL #1 tournament. The golf team is coached by Tim Meyer and Lee McGhee.

 

Baseball

Chris Henry returns for his second season as head coach of the varsity team. Oakdale will host Beyer on Friday, Feb. 22 with a 3:30 p.m. start time. Oakdale’s first Valley Oak League game will be held on March 27 against East Union. Assisting Henry are Dwayne Haakma and Matt Candelario. Coaching the junior varsity will be Joey Machado and entering his first year as freshman coach will be Brian Chubbon.

 

Softball

For nearly two decades Larry Loger has been the man in charge for the softball girls and that isn’t changing this season. Assisting Loger will be Mike Bye and first year softball assistant coach Trent Merzon. The junior varsity is coached by Karla Espinoza with assistants Rod Long and Jaime Smith. Wednesday, Feb. 20 Oakdale is slated to host Enochs for a scrimmage and then they will open non-conference play at home on Tuesday, Feb. 26 against Elk Grove. The Valley Oak League season opener is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19 at Kimball. All league games are scheduled for a 4 p.m. start time, except for the regular season finale game against East Union at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 2.
