Oakdale’s winning streak has now reached double digits, hitting the 10-win plateau.

The Oakdale High School varsity boys basketball team earned three wins this past week to give them a 10-0 start to the season. Summerville, Hughson and Merced all fell victim to the Mustangs. Oakdale earned two road wins and on Friday night, Dec. 14 ran over Merced 64-39 in front of a large, energetic home crowd.

“Our support from the fans and supporters has been amazing, we really haven’t had that in recent years and it is very appreciated that they came out tonight to root us on,” said forward Evan Brush.

Freshman Kobe Nunes scored the team’s first five points and Wyatt Waterworth, with a hand in his face, pulled down an offensive rebound and finished with a put back off the glass to give Oakdale their first lead, 9-8, with 4:26 remaining in the first quarter. Oakdale never gave up the lead once they had it.

Waterworth continued to punish the visitors when center Sam Medlin pulled down a rebound and kicked it out to Waterworth who gave an assist to Nunes for a fast break layup to go up 14-10 late in the first quarter. Nunes finished with 15 points and Waterworth scored four points.

In the second quarter, Oakdale outscored the Bears 21-6 to pull away from Merced. In that quarter, John Foreman, Jonah Norman and Brush helped carry the team offensively and Medlin made life difficult for the Bears on the other end of the floor.

In the second half, Medlin got the crowd on their feet with a three point field goal at the top of the key with 6:12 left in the third quarter to go up 44-18. In the fourth quarter Medlin sent the crowd into a frenzy when he finished hard with a two hand dunk over a Bears defender. Medlin finished with 11 points on the night.

Eight different Mustangs scored on the night.

“It was great getting everyone involved tonight, we all contributed to the win,” Brush said following the game. He finished with nine points.

Earlier in the week Oakdale defeated Summerville 47-40 where Nunes scored 24 points, and on Thursday night, Dec. 13 Oakdale picked up a 64-44 road win over Hughson. Oakdale scored 25 points in the second quarter and were led by Foreman’s 16 points and Nunes had 12 points.

Oakdale looks to keep up their momentum when they host both Bret Harte (Tuesday, Dec. 18 following The Leader’s press time) and on Friday evening against McNair. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

JUNIOR VARSITY

Much like the varsity, the JV boys picked up three wins. Oakdale defeated Summerville 56-34; Hughson 76-35 and Merced 60-43. Jason Rawe had a big week scoring 11 points against Summerville, 15 against Hughson and scored a dozen over Merced.

FRESHMEN

The freshmen continue to thrive under head coach Jeremy Fields, as they picked up three wins this week. A 52-36 road win over Summerville started their week and continued when they defeated Hughson 57-37 and bookended their week with a 42-29 home win over Merced.
