Volleyball Girls Spike Opposition In League Play

The varsity girls volleyball team earned its fourth straight league win this past week as they put a pair of contests in the win column. Oakdale defeated Weston Ranch and Central Catholic to improve to 5-1 in the Valley Oak League.

On Monday, Sept. 25 the girls defeated visiting Weston Ranch in three straight sets, 25-8, 25-16, 25-5. Alyssa Cogburn led the team with 26 assists and tied with Grace Verdegaal and Vienna Juarez with one block. Abby Matoso led the team with nine kills, Juarez accounted for seven kills. Kailee Whorton hit the floor consistently for a game high 13 digs. Jocelyn Burke served up eight aces.

Two days later the girls knocked off the Raiders 25-16, 25-21, 25-19. Cogburn led the way with 24 assists and four aces. Oakdale was aggressive and had 21 kills led by Verdegaal’s six. Jodie Whitley, Matoso and Brittany Gibson each had five. Whorton and Matoso led the team in digs with 13 (Whorton) and 12 (Matoso).

Oakdale is currently in second place in the Valley Oak League and will have two consecutive home games. On Monday, Oct. 2 the girls hosted Lathrop (4-2) following The Leader press time. On Wednesday, Oct. 4 the team will host Sierra (0-5). Monday, Oct. 9 the girls will hit the road to clash with first place Manteca (6-0). All games are scheduled for 6 p.m.

 

JUNIOR VARSITY

The junior varsity girls split their week with a 2-1 victory over Weston Ranch but lost to Central Catholic 2-0. Against Weston Ranch the girls took the first set 25-11 but fell in an intense second set 24-26. They regrouped in the third set to cruise to a 15-9 victory. Central Catholic made quick work of Oakdale on Wednesday, Sept. 27 with a pair of victories 25-16, 25-19.

 

FRESHMEN

The youngest of the three teams earned two wins this week as they defeated Weston Ranch in straight sets 25-5, 25-12. They defeated Central Catholic on the road in straight sets 25-11, 25-21. This Saturday, Oct. 7 the team will be hosting the Oakdale Frosh Invitational that is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.
