Varsity Volleyball Girls Win Sixth Straight

Chalk up two more wins for the Oakdale varsity volleyball team, as the girls defeated Lathrop and Sierra this past week. The two wins extended the team’s winning streak to six and they were solidly in second place in the Valley Oak League standings.

On Monday, Oct. 2 the girls defeated Lathrop 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 20-25, 25-15). Two days later the girls made short work of visiting Sierra in three sets. Behind Grace Verdegaal’s five aces, four kills and two blocks, Oakdale won 25-15, 25-9, 25-14. Alyssa Cogburn contributed with a team high 26 kills, and Abigail Matoso delivered nine kills for Oakdale.

The team traveled to Manteca to take on the first place Lady Buffaloes on Monday, Oct. 9 following The Leader’s press time. Manteca is unbeaten in Valley Oak League action (8-0) and defeated Oakdale 3-1 on Sept. 13 for Oakdale’s lone loss this season.

Oakdale will host Kimball on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.

The Lady Mustangs play four of their final six games on the road with their final home game scheduled for Monday, Oct. 23 against Central Catholic. That game will be Senior Night 2017 and is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

In junior varsity action Oakdale defeated Lathrop 25-22, 25-6 but fell to Sierra in straight sets 15-25, 19-25. The girls will host Kimball on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m.

The freshman girls earned two victories this past week. The girls defeated Lathrop 25-12, 25-6. The youngest of the three teams also knocked off Sierra in straight sets 25-11, 25-13. Oakdale will host Kimball on Wednesday night at 4 p.m.
