It was a mixed week for the varsity tennis team, as the girls faced a pair of Valley Oak League (VOL) teams, suffering a tough 5-4 loss to Manteca on Tuesday, Sept. 23. They regrouped and earned a 7-2 victory over Weston Ranch on Thursday, Sept. 25.

Oakdale’s Christine Kim opened up the day against Manteca’s Lizzie Tolbert and took her down 6-7, 6-2, 10-5 to earn the victory. Unfortunately for Oakdale, it was their only singles victory on the day as Carley Newbill, Danika Brown, Katie Schultz and Danielle Conway all came up short in their singles matches. Down, but not discouraged, the Mustangs’ doubles stepped up and put on a clinic. The team of Cori Barney and Lily Fabry took down Alondra Avila and Karyn Mendsco 6-0, 6-4. Cammi Mauchely and Alyssa Gouviea also made short work of Manteca’s Rable Dehaal and Gladys Sandoval 6-4, 6-1. In the final match of the evening, Oakdale’s Amber Williams and Jessica Gorman were taken to the limit against Haley Both and Taylor Covona in a thrilling three set match. Williams and Gorman squeaked out a 7-6 first set victory but fell 4-7 in the second set. The duo regrouped and earned a hard fought victory as they won 6-3.

Thursday, the Weston Ranch Cougars came to town looking for an upset. The Mustangs took control early as Kim, Newbill, Brown and Conway all earned victories in singles competition. The doubles once again dominated to help the Mustangs earn the 7-2 victory. After dropping the first set to the Vang sisters 4-6, Barney and Fabry regrouped and answered with a pair of 6-1 victories to put them away. Mauchley and Gouveia defeated Jaskirat Kaur and Alyssa Ryan 7-5, 6-1. Wrapping up the contest were Williams and Gorman, who made short work of Rubi Snchez and Rashmeet Toger 6-4, 6-0.

Oakdale will have a pair of home VOL match ups this week as they welcome Kimball and East Union to town.
