Oakdale’s (8-3-2, 1-1-0) varsity girls soccer team opened up their Valley Oak League (VOL) season this past week with mixed results. In their season opener, Oakdale came out on the wrong side of a 1-0 shutout on the road against Kimball (3-2-5, 1-1-0) on Monday, March 21. The Lady Mustangs flipped the script on Wednesday, March 23 when they went from being blanked, to dishing out a shutout of their own on the road against Weston Ranch (5-4-0, 0-2-0) with a 4-0 victory.

“We had an opportunity to win against Kimball. We had numerous shots at the goal in both halves but could not connect. We had that game under control but could not find a way to score,” explained head coach Alfredo Quiroga. “I think maybe the nerves got the best of the girls that night.”

Sophomore utility player Viviana Albor found the net twice for Oakdale against Weston Ranch and seniors Bailey Antonio and Madison Feuerstein continue to have a brilliant final season for the Lady Mustangs. Along with her eleventh goal of the season, forward Feuerstein earned her fifth assist of the season. Goalkeeper Melissa Ibarra was the anchor on defense, where the senior made three saves on the evening in the shutout.

“The girls responded to their loss with a great team effort. Everyone got involved as far as minutes played and distributing the ball. It was nice to see them play with confidence after the Kimball loss,” Quiroga pointed out.

Oakdale played their third VOL match on Monday, March 28 when the girls headed to Lathrop (1-5-1, 0-2-0) to clash with the Spartans. The match was held following The Leader’s press time. Oakdale’s next VOL match will be Monday, April 4 against first place Manteca (11-1-0, 2-0-0). Oakdale’s match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
