Prior to Tuesday night’s season finale against Sierra on Feb. 13, Oakdale honored a pair of seniors for Senior Night 2018. Sarah Bohrer and Whitney Neilson were recognized for their contributions to the Oakdale High School girls’ basketball program.
“It’s hard to believe this night is here,” admitted Neilson.
Shortly after the ceremony, the Lady Mustangs (13-14, 5-9) hosted the Timberwolves (2-12, 9-18) in the final game of the season for both Valley Oak League teams. Both seniors helped the Lady Mustangs to a 68-30 home win as Bohrer scored a game high 27 points and Nielson added 11.
“I just wanted to come out here tonight and play hard, leave nothing behind,” Bohrer said following the game.
Eleven of the team’s first 16 points were scored by the senior duo and Oakdale built up a commanding 31-16 halftime lead. Oakdale opened the second half on an 11-0 run and pulled away from their opponent.
As a team Oakdale connected on 11 three-point field goals, outscoring the visitors total point margin in just three point field goals alone.
“It was a great way to go out. I will never forget this team or the coaches,” Nielson said.
Oakdale finished the season winning two of their final three games and finished in fifth place in the Valley Oak League standings. On their current roster there are four juniors, a sophomore and a freshman who could be returning next season, along with a talented junior varsity roster.
“I would tell the young players on this team and the future incoming players that this program takes dedication. Play and practice your best every day,” Nielson said.
A defensive effort helped the junior varsity girls to a 48-12 home win over Sierra. The girls held Sierra to just five points through three quarters of play. Oakdale was led by Kayden Legan’s 17 point effort. Legan connected on five three-point field goals. Kendra Branch scored eight points and had nine steals.
It was a rough way to end the season as the youngest Lady Mustangs fell to Sierra by a 44-7 final. Oakdale was held scoreless in the first half.
