Mustang golfers are off to a 3-0 start, the boys enjoying a busy beginning to the 2016 season. The varsity linksters defeated Ceres 194-220 in non-league play, and opened their Valley Oak League season with a convincing 211-285 victory over Lathrop.
On Wednesday, March 2 the team welcomed Ceres to Oakdale Golf and Country Club (OGCC) for seven hole action, due to darkness. Finding his way to the top of the leaderboard for the short game was Zackary Tamburrino of Oakdale. Tamburrino shot 33 through seven holes, and was two strokes ahead of his teammate Greg Wikoff (35). Calvin Reed and Tristian Jaramillo each scored 41 on the day for the Mustangs. Finishing the day for Oakdale were Jack Verdegaal (44) and Corey Leach (58). Ceres was led by Gary Condit (36).
Oakdale opened up league play against the Spartans on Thursday, March 5 at OGCC. Continuing his impressive start to the season, Wikoff found himself at the top of the leaderboard. Through nine holes, Wikoff ended his round with 38. Not too far behind Wikoff were teammates David Myrtakis (40); Jaramillo (41) and Reed (42). Tamburrino, who led the team against Ceres, struggled on Thursday, posting a 50 on the day. However, Tamburrino carded a score lower than five of the six Spartans that day. Verdegaal finished the day with 59.
Monday, March 7 Oakdale hosted The Oakdale Cup at OGCC, following The Leader’s press time. The team also traveled to Dryden Park Golf Course to play Central Catholic on Tuesday, March 8. Oakdale will be back in action on Thursday, March 10 against Kimball at Oakdale with tee time set for 3 p.m.
