Lady Tennis On Cruise Control

It is pretty early in the Valley Oak League season, but that has not stopped the Oakdale High tennis team from putting together a solid opening through the first stages of the VOL campaign.

Oakdale is cruising along behind the stellar singles play of Elise Derby and Tierney Seidel and a rejuvenated group of doubles players who are poised to make a push for the VOL crown.

Derby was phenomenal again in this week’s work docket, winning all of her matches in a 12-3 victory over Manteca and knocking off the only singles player for Weston Ranch without trouble.

Derby rolled over Lexi Ziakas 6-0, Jasmine Sandu 6-0 and Hilary Coleman 6-3 in her action in the Manteca victory. Siedel had even less trouble, knocking off the same trio 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, respectively.

Doubles play saw the Lady Mustangs dispose of the Buffaloes with ease, winning each of the four matches with minimal effort needed. Korinne Baxter and Kristin Mello teamed up for a pair of impressive 10-1 runs over Manteca’s No.1 and No. 2 teams, while Mariah King and Kristen Barrett took down the two Manteca combinations by the score of 10-2 in both matches.

Things proved to be as easy when the squad rolled out the welcome mats for Weston Ranch, dropping the Cougars 15-0 to remain unbeaten in VOL play.

The Cougars only singles player of record was Nicole Bowen and Derby, Seidel and Emily Clayton all were able to fend her off, earning the bulk of the Lady Mustangs’ points.

Korinne Baxter teamed up with Laurie Baxter to win a perfect 10-0 match in doubles play, while the tandem of King and Barrett proved to be too much for Weston Ranch, winning 10-3 and 10-2 in their action.

Oakdale will look to continue its shining play as they make a trip to Manteca to take on the Sierra Timberwolves (Sept. 16), followed by a home match against the Ceres Bulldogs (Sept. 17).
