In a busy week for the varsity Lady Mustangs soccer squad, the girls edged Enochs 4-3 on the road in their March 7 match. The girls then headed to Manteca for a weekend tournament at Sierra High School. Oakdale finished the tournament in second place with a record of 2-1-1.

In their road win over Enochs, the Lady Mustangs used a big first half to help defeat the Eagles, scoring three of their four goals in the first half. Finding the net for Oakdale were sophomore forward Kylee Black, senior midfielder Breanna Garza, freshman midfielder Brianna Montoya and senior forward Madison Feuerstein. Assists for Oakdale came from senior Natali Montoya, senior Bailey Antonio and Brianna Montoya. Melissa Ibarra had goalkeeper duties for the first half where she had four saves, and senior Kaylee DeRuyter came on in relief in the second half and had three saves for Oakdale.

In their tournament play, Oakdale faced the Eagles once again in the first match of the day. Like their previous match, Oakdale hung four goals on Enochs to win 4-1. Feuerstein and Black found the net along with junior midfielder Alyssa Rowe and utility player sophomore Viviana Albor. Junior utility player Bella Cobarruvias led the team with two assists. Freshman utility player Krissy Lolonis and Feurstein added an assist each.

Oakdale and West walked away in a scoreless tie for the team’s second game of the day. On Saturday, Oakdale scored two second half goals to tie Bear Creek but won the match in a 3-1 final on penalty kicks. Garza and Albor scored Oakdale’s goals in the win. In the finals of the tournament, Oakdale took on host Sierra. Sierra, which has yet to lose a match so far in 2016, defeated Oakdale 4-1. The two Valley Oak League schools squared off but Sierra jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back. Megan Burke’s pass to Rowe in the second half accounted for Oakdale’s only score of the game.

Oakdale is off until league play begins on Monday, March 21 when they travel to Kimball to take on the Jaguars.
