Some 300 cheerleaders, from 10 different schools around Northern California, invaded Oakdale High School during the summer for JAMZ Central California Camp. This dance and cheer camp was to invite a select few to perform at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. With just 15 spots up for grabs and 300 hopefuls, every cheerleader had to impress the panel and earn their spots. The top 50 were selected by JAMZ staff and were narrowed down to just 15. Five of the final 15 were Oakdale residents. Ryleigh Bellington, Reagan Oliveira, Kierstyn Springer, Claire Waite and Jaicee Fields were all in the top 15 and are eligible to perform in Orlando on New Year’s Day at the Citrus Bowl.

“It’s a huge honor really. To perform at halftime will be huge and I am looking forward to it,” said Bellington, a senior at Oakdale High School.

Both Oliveira and Springer are sophomores at Oakdale High School and Waite and Fields are both eighth graders at Oakdale Junior High School.

The trio of high schoolers took part in competitive dance.

“I think the camp was great and a lot of fun. I arrived the second day and was fortunate enough to compete. I am thankful for the opportunity,” said Oliveira.

“The camp itself was intense, knowing that only 15 got to advance and go to Orlando. I’m excited to be one of them,” added Springer.

The high school cheerleaders are coached by Heather Vierra and the junior high school cheerleaders are coached by Alexa McConnell.

“Coach Vierra is amazing. She is very honest and keeps us honest. If it’s (the routine) not good enough she tells us,” said Oliveira.
