Dodging raindrops, OHS spring squads stay busy

Despite some significant rainfall during the past week, many Oakdale sports teams did get to take part in their matches, meets and games.

On Thursday, March 13 Oakdale hosted Patterson in the first Valley Oak League track and field dual meet of the season. The Mustangs varsity boys and varsity girls earned big wins over the visitors. For the varsity boys it was a 95-46 victory and the girls won 103-37.

Jason Martinho took first place in both the 100 meter and 200-meter races. Grant Gardner placed first in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, 10 inches. Gardner also placed first in the triple jump. Noah Concepcion placed first in the high jump. Eric Rubio placed first in the shot put at 38 feet, one-and-a-half inches and first in discus at 129 feet. Quinn Baca placed first in the 3200 meters and 1600 meters. Luke Kirpatrick placed first in the long jump at 19 feet, 6.5 inches.

For the girls Danika Savage placed first in the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Natalie Powell placed first in the discus at 106 feet, nine inches. Powell also took first in the shot put at 34 feet, five inches. Lindsey McPhee placed first in the 100 meters, triple jump and the pole vault.

Oakdale’s next meet will be at Manteca High School on Thursday, March 20 at 4:30 p.m.

 

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

The 2025 Valley Oak League boys volleyball season began on Wednesday, March 12 when Oakdale hosted Patterson. It would be the visitors who came away with a 3-0 victory. The Tigers clawed their way through Oakdale 25-18, 25-20, 25-21.

Set two was a back-and-forth affair as Tanner Humphrey found an open spot between two Tiger defenders to give Oakdale a 9-8 advantage. The match would be tied at 9 and then 10. Humphrey got an ace to make it an 11-10 Mustangs lead. Oakdale would build up a 13-11 advantage but Patterson rallied and tied it up at 14. Humphrey continued to impress in the set as he spiked the ball between two Tigers to tie it at 16. The Tigers went on a 3-0 run making it 19-16, resulting in a time out for Oakdale. The momentum continued to favor the visitors as the Tigers went up 24-18 before closing it out 25-20.

In the third set Patterson opened up on a 4-0 run before Mortiz Toenjes got Oakdale on the board with a tap over the net that got past the Tigers defender. Oakdale used that to their advantage and went on a 9-5 run to tie it up at 9. Later, down 24-18 Toenjes tapped the ball over and made it a 24-19 contest. The Mustangs rallied to close the gap to 24-21 but the Tigers closed it out to win 25-21.

Next up, Oakdale has a game scheduled for Monday night, March 24 when they host Sierra. They will then be on a long stretch of road games following this contest. They will have four straight road contests beginning on Wednesday, March 26 at Central Catholic.

 

BOYS TENNIS

In their lone match of the week, the Oakdale High School varsity boys tennis earned a thrilling 5-4 home win over Patterson. The match took place on Tuesday, March 11 when the new Valley Oak League member Tigers took the court.

Five out of six singles matches went in favor of the Mustangs. Camden Knight battled to a 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 victory while Jaxton Marler won 6-2, 6-3. Matthew Yakligian got a 6-0, 6-1 win and Austin Speiller also won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Max Birchall was a 7-5, 6-1 winner. The lone singles loss of the day came for Levi Hensley.

The Tigers swept Oakdale in doubles action with losses for the Mustang duos of Gianni Alburo and Mitchell Benning; Brody Lev and Border Rath; Anthony Liona and Abraham Jeevan.

Thursday, March 18 Oakdale travels to Modesto to face Central Catholic at 3 p.m. The next day the Mustangs will host Sierra with a start time scheduled for 3 p.m.

Friday, March 14 Oakdale hosted Central Catholic in a Valley Oak League meet. The following are the swimmers who placed first in their respective events.
