Action continues in busy spring season for OHS

Clear skies and warming temperatures saw multiple sports teams in action for Mustang athletics this past week. Squads continue play in the Valley Oak League.

 

SOFTBALL

In two games this past week, the Lady Mustangs crafted a pair of victories.

On Tuesday, April 8, they overwhelmed Patterson by a 10-2 final, collecting 11 hits. Madi Bohannon had three RBI on the day.

Then, Oakdale defeated Sierra 6-2 in a home game that took place on Thursday, April 10. Despite committing three errors, Oakdale overcame the miscues to win their second straight contest. The Lady Mustangs rapped out 11 hits in the win including two each by Bohannon, Brielle Lee, Jaelyn Lee and Ella Christensen. Reese Donaldson blasted a home run in the win. Jaelyn Lee went into the seventh inning, striking out 11 batters.

Following the wins, Oakdale is currently 5-3 with a 10-6 overall record. The Mustangs are currently in fourth place in the Valley Oak League. This week Oakdale takes on first place Central Catholic on Tuesday, April 15 following The Leader press time. Thursday Oakdale will play Mountain House at 4 p.m. on the road.

Junior Varsity- Oakdale defeated Sierra 18-3 in their only game of the week. Oakdale will be off until April 29 when they host Manteca.

 

BASEBALL

The varsity baseball team’s three game series with the Patterson Tigers began on April 7 and concluded on April 11. Oakdale took two games in the series against the newcomers to the Valley Oak League. Game one went to extra innings in Oakdale and it was the home team coming away with a 2-1 victory in eight innings. Down 1-0 in the fifth inning; Oakdale tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Bas Stice and Landon Schutte each drove in a run for Oakdale. Oakdale had seven total hits; including a two-hit day by Eric Velazquez. The Mustangs stole four bases in the game. Griffin Costa stole a pair and Peyton Wallace and Velazquez each swiped one. Pitching for Oakdale were Ayden Ardis and Landon Schutte. Ardis pitched three innings and gave up just three hits and no runs. He struck out four. Schutte pitched five innings, giving up an unearned run, and struck out nine.

Game two at Patterson, the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. Oakdale only had four hits in the loss. Two of those hits came off the bat of Ardis. The lone run for Oakdale came off the bat of Schutte as Velazquez came across the plate in the top of the fourth inning. Oakdale lost the game 3-1.

The rubber match wrapped up on Friday afternoon where Oakdale hosted the Tigers. It was Oakdale winning the game and the series, 10-2. Oakdale scored nine runs in the fourth inning. Schutte launched a home run and drove in four runs. Evan Criswell, Peyton Wallace and Velazquez each drove in one run. Stice stole three bases. Jordan Haver pitched six strong innings for Oakdale. He struck out 10 batters and gave up one earned run.

This week Oakdale will take on East Union in a three-game series. Oakdale is currently in third place in the Valley Oak League. East Union is right behind them in fourth place. This crucial series began on Monday, April 14 following The Leader press time. Game two is scheduled on April 16 at East Union and game three will be played on Thursday, April 17 at Oakdale with a 4 p.m. start time.

Junior Varsity – It was a three-game sweep against the Tigers. In three games the JV boys scored 25 runs. Game one Oakdale edged out a 3-2 victory in extra innings. Game two Oakdale posted a 10-0 shutout and wrapped up the finale with a 12-2 victory.

Frosh - In their lone game of the week Oakdale defeated Central Catholic 11-1.

 

GOLF

Playing in a VOL Tournament hosted at Tracy Golf and Country Club on April 7, Oakdale took the top spot with a team score of 395. Estuardo Duque shot a 70 on the day, followed by Owen Hauselmann, 72; Nolan Harris, 79; Brody Boysen, 85; and Robert Bordona rounding out the scoring with an 89. Central Catholic was second with a team score of 418, followed by Mountain House, 437; East Union, 442; Sierra, 454; Manteca, 464; and Patterson, 516.

 

TENNIS

On April 11, the Oakdale High School boys tennis team finished their regular season. Oakdale defeated Central Catholic 7-2.

In singles action Matthew Yakligian won his match 6-3, 6-3. Levi Hensley took a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Austin Speiller won via default. In a singles battle it was Tristan McCarthy who won 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) 1-0 (10-7). Oakdale now turns their attention to the postseason with the Valley Oak League tournament scheduled for the end of the month. The Valley Oak League singles tournament takes place on Tuesday, April 22 at Patterson High School. On Thursday, April 24 doubles tournament action takes place at Patterson High School. Both tournaments currently have a start time of 9 a.m.
