John passed away on July 11, 2021 at the age of 64, in his hometown of Oakdale. He was born in Oakdale, California to Eunice (Granny) and Pete (Pops) Hurst. He had an older brother, Terry Hurst. John has now joined them all in their eternal resting place, Heaven. John was married to the love of his life, Karen Hurst for 38 joyful years. John is survived by his loving wife Karen, two daughters and son-in-laws, Dawn and Travis Garcia, Jennifer and Clayton James. He is survived by his five beautiful grandchildren: Hannah, Brooklynn, Hunter Garcia, Taylor and Priscilla James. John was and ever shall be the proudest, most amazing Papa (Poppit) ever. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Linda Hurst. John’s vivacious, kind-hearted and loving ways will be missed more than words can express.
During his life, John was an incredibly hardworking, honest, kind, quick-witted, fun-loving man; that was truly devoted to his family, friends and helping those in need. He worked for a total of 38 years for The City of Riverbank, he retired in October of 2015. He made a long lasting impression for all of his dedication to success, as well as making this world a better place, one park at a time. To those that were close to him, he was a father figure, filled with wisdom and purpose to share when one needed to hear it most. His smile and laugh was contagious and his jokes were many throughout the ages, they were always funny and always thoughtful. In the movie, “The Sandlot” Babe Ruth was quoted: “Remember, kid there’s heroes and there’s legends. Heroes get remembered, but legends never die. Follow your heart, kid, and you’ll never go wrong.” John is considered a legend to his family, friends and community. He will forever live on in our hearts, for the precious memories we shared together here on earth, will be our greatest treasure. John will be honored with a Going Home Service in the outdoor venue at River Oak Grace Community Church, 7712 Rodden Road, Oakdale on September 17 at 10 a.m.
