The Stanislaus County Veterans Advisory Commission will be holding its March meeting in Oakdale on Monday, March 25 in the City Council Chambers, 277 N. Second Ave., scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The commission was established by the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors in 2015 to be the voice for veterans in Stanislaus County. The commission includes one veteran from each supervisorial district and two at large members. Among its accomplishments, is the establishment of the Stanislaus Veterans Center in Modesto and the county Vets Van program providing transportation to homebound and disabled veterans to medical appointments which was the first of its kind in the nation.
The meeting will include reports from various agencies dealing with veterans’ issues including the Stanislaus Veterans Service Office, the Modesto VA clinic, local veteran’s groups and representatives of local county, state and federal legislatures. American Veterans First in Riverbank, which is spearheading a campaign to strengthen and fix the crack in the Veterans Monument located in Dorada Park, will be the guest presenters.
The commission has also been tasked with selecting a Veteran of the Year for each supervisorial district to be awarded by the Board of Supervisors in November. Nomination forms will be made available at the Stanislaus Veterans Center, 3500 Coffee Road in Modesto.
