New Chief Strategy Advisor joins BEAM Circular team
Maxon
Dr. Mary Maxon

Earlier this month, BEAM Circular announced the appointment of Dr. Mary Maxon to the organization’s Executive Leadership Team as Chief Strategy Advisor, a new role that will help guide BEAM’s strategic direction as it deepens its influence across state, national, and international bioeconomy policy and innovation ecosystems.

Maxon brings a rare combination of scientific, industry, and public policy leadership expertise to BEAM Circular. She currently serves as a Visiting Associate at Caltech’s Linde Center for Science, Society, and Policy and most recently led the Biosciences Institute at Schmidt Sciences, where she spearheaded new efforts to seed and scale innovation in synthetic biology and the broader bioeconomy. Her career spans leadership roles in both the private and public sectors, including her tenure as Assistant Director for Biological Research at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, where she was the principal author of the Obama Administration’s National Bioeconomy Blueprint.

Her national and global standing is further reflected in her service as a member of the International Advisory Council on Global Bioeconomy, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Standing Committee on Advances and National Security Implications of Transdisciplinary Biotechnology, and the Carnegie Science Board of Trustees. She also serves as a biotechnology subject matter expert to Dr. Eric Schmidt, a Commissioner on the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology, and a member of the Board of the Engineering Biology Research Consortium.

“Mary is one of the most respected voices in the bioeconomy today, with an extraordinary track record spanning science, industry, and the highest levels of government policy,” said Karen Warner, Founder and CEO of BEAM Circular. “Her appointment reflects the long-term vision and trajectory of BEAM’s efforts — from a regional hub for innovation in the Central Valley, to a leading convener and catalyst of state, national, and global partnerships that advance the circular bioeconomy. Mary’s expertise will be instrumental as we scale our impact and shape policy and innovation on the world stage. We are thrilled to welcome her to our team.”

As Chief Strategy Advisor, Maxon will support long-term strategic planning and serve as an ambassador for the organization in national and international arenas. Her work will focus on advancing global strategy and partnerships, informing the development of BEAM’s flagship project, the California Bioeconomy Innovation Campus, and providing strategic and organizational counsel to BEAM’s leadership.

“BEAM Circular is leading circular bioeconomy efforts in the U.S., doing exceptional work at the intersection of innovation, domestic manufacturing, and rural economic development in a region with a central role to play in transforming the national and global bioeconomy,” said Dr. Maxon. “I’m honored to join this team at such a pivotal moment, and I look forward to helping BEAM strengthen its partnerships and its voice both here in California and around the world.”

Maxon’s appointment comes as BEAM Circular continues to expand its footprint in shaping bioeconomy strategy and forging public-private partnerships with global reach, further establishing the organization as a leading force in the circular bioeconomy movement.
