The first shovels full of dirt were turned on May 9 for the Third Avenue improvements. Marg Jackson/The Leader

The perimeter construction fencing has gone up, the ‘road closed’ signs are in place and a group of city council members and department heads turned the first shovels full of dirt for the Third Avenue Improvement Project in downtown Oakdale on Monday, May 9. The extensive renovation project along North Third, between E and F streets, has a scheduled completion date of Sept. 5, 2022. Work will be done primarily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; access to businesses along both sides of the street will be provided throughout the construction period. Monday saw the arrival of heavy equipment, the removal of several trees, and the groundbreaking ceremony. When completed, the area will feature decorative pavers and street lamps, planter boxes and wider street corners, creating a more pedestrian friendly downtown corridor.
