Presidents Day Holiday Prompts Local Closures
US Flag

Monday, Feb. 15 will be observed as Presidents’ Day to mark the birthday of George Washington, first President of the United States, and it is a federal holiday.

Originally designed to honor Washington, the holiday later expanded to include honoring all presidents, and is also close to the actual birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the nation’s 16th president.

City offices will be closed, banks are closed, businesses have the option of closing and there will be no mail delivery that day.

The Oakdale City Council, which normally meets the first and third Mondays of the month, will not have a meeting on Feb. 15 because of the holiday observance, delaying it instead until Tuesday, Feb. 16 starting at 7 p.m. in the council chambers.

The Monday holiday also signals the start of a mid-winter break for Oakdale schools. The schools will be closed from Monday, Feb. 15 through Monday, Feb. 22, with classes resuming on all campuses on Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Washington’s birthday was Feb. 22, 1732 and Lincoln’s birthday was Feb. 12, 1809 with the observance of the federal Presidents’ Day holiday now coming each year on the third Monday of February.
