A breach in security by Internet hackers resulted in the theft of more than $118,000 from Oak Valley Community Bank that belonged to the City of Oakdale.

Several federal agencies are investigating the theft which occurred on Sept. 6 but until now, word of the theft had been kept quiet so as not to impede the investigation.

Interim City Manager Greg Wellman said he was unable to provide more details of the case but a press conference has been scheduled for 3 p.m. at City Hall Thursday, Sept. 22.

Wellman would not specify which city department funds had been stolen, but did say he didn't believe the funds came from the general fund. He also stated Oak Valley Community Bank has been very cooperative throughout the investigation and in spite of the security breach, the City of Oakdale did not feel the need to withdraw any separate accounts currently banked in the local establishment.

The Oakdale Leader will provide updates on the web as they happen. The full story will appear in the Wednesday, Sept. 28 edition of the paper.
