Man Slices Own Throat In Front Of Police
Oakdale police

Oakdale Police responded to a report of a family disturbance at an unknown apartment on the 300 block of S. Sixth Ave. on Wednesday afternoon, Dec 18 and ended up summoning an ambulance for a man who stabbed himself.

At 3:47 p.m., officers arrived at an apartment complex and were told by a witness that the disturbance was in apartment number four. At that time officers heard a female screaming for help inside the residence.

When the responding officers went to the apartment where the screams were coming from, they found the door barricaded by a male subject inside. Officers were able to force their way to make entry and were confronted by the male who was holding a medium-sized kitchen knife to his own throat. Police issued several commands for him to drop the knife and he refused.

Police used a Taser on the subject and during a struggle, he proceeded to slash his own throat and then stab himself in his face and throat areas.

Police were eventually able to subdue the man and get him restrained in handcuffs. Officers applied first aid until the arrival of rescue personnel.

The injuries the male sustained were considered life threatening, according to Sgt. Brian Shimmel who was one of the officers involved.

The male was transported to Oak Valley Hospital for medical treatment and then to Memorial Hospital in Modesto for psychiatric evaluation.

Once the male is released, he will be booked for domestic violence and resisting arrest charges.
