An early morning accident May 13 near Knights Ferry was still under investigation at press time on Tuesday, with CHP and emergency crews on scene of the fatality on Highway 120/108 in the area known as Lovers Leap near Lancaster Road east of Oakdale.

Initial reports by the Modesto CHP office were that a big rig truck, traveling east on Highway 120 and a Mercedes Benz, traveling westbound at an undetermined speed, collided around 3:52 a.m.

As a result of the collision, the driver of the Mercedes sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP was withholding the name of the driver of the Mercedes, pending family notification. At press time she was identified only as a 47-year-old female out of Hughson.

“For unknown reasons the Mercedes crossed over the double yellow lines into the path of the big rig causing a head-on collision,” said CHP Officer John Martinez.

The investigation so far showed the big rig was not speeding or had any known mechanical faults.

Officer Martinez said the driver of the big rig was a 37-year-old man out of Modesto. He sustained minor injuries and was transported to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for treatment.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a contributing factor in the collision.

The investigation of the accident is continuing.
