A two-vehicle accident along Highway 120 just east of Escalon jammed up traffic and resulted in major injuries to one of the drivers about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 1.

California Highway Patrol units out of Stockton were dispatched to the scene along the highway, just east of Steinegul Road, to a head on crash involving a car and a pick-up truck towing a trailer.

Escalon Police responded to the scene to assist with traffic control while CHP officers were en route. Escalon Fire Department and Escalon Community Ambulance crews also responded, with injuries reported and traffic stopped in both directions.

Officials on scene said a Honda was westbound on Highway 120 and the pick-up and trailer were eastbound and collided head on. There was no determination as of press time what led to the accident.

“The driver of the Honda was the only one in that vehicle and he was pinned in for about 30 minutes,” Escalon Fire Chief Rick Mello said of crews having to extricate him. “We had to take the roof off and pry open the door, pull the dash.”

The driver, whose name was not available, was from Modesto, officials said, and was taken by Escalon Community Ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Modesto suffering from injuries to his left arm and both legs.

The roadway was blocked for some time as the extrication and rescue efforts, as well as the clean-up, were underway. Traffic was detoured around the scene.

There were no reported injuries to the occupants of the pick-up truck, which reportedly was on its way to Yosemite.
