The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department reported on Monday, Feb. 24 that a body was found at the Horseshoe Recreation area, located on Orange Blossom Road just east of Oakdale.

The body was discovered by three individuals on Wednesday, Feb. 19 who were walking in the area on their way to go fishing. They immediately called 911 and emergency crews responded. The witnesses stated they did not know who the victim was and it was clear he was deceased when they found him.

The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Juan Jose Calvillo, 40, of Turlock and formerly of Oakdale. According to the coroner, Calvillo suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

It is unknown why the sheriff’s department held information five days regarding this case until Monday.

Additionally, details on the nature of the gunshot wound or type of incident – self-inflicted suicide or suspected homicide – are not being released.

Detectives and media representatives of the sheriff’s department did not return calls by press time.
