The Knights Ferry Post Office has new hours, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You can mail packages, letters, buy stamps etc. at our office in Miller’s Hall.

Condolences go out to the Taylor family on the death of Randy Taylor. He was a long time Morrison Road resident. He is survived by his wife, Gail (Milam) Taylor and children Nicole Pena (Oscar) and Amanda Sousa (Mario). He left behind five grandchildren, Rylie, Alex and Owen Pena and Braden and Wyatt Sousa. Graveside services were held at the Knights Ferry Oak Grove Cemetery on last Monday.

Teri Foster held a Spa Weekend to celebrate her daughter’s big 50. Debbie Salsa enjoyed her party with friends and relatives. It was a girls only weekend so Bernie stayed with Debbie’s husband.

Bev Noe reports that the rattlesnake count is up to 11. She went out to clean the pool, and walked right past the curled up snake! When she turned around, it was still sleeping so she called John, Bonnie’s husband, to come over and kill it. The rattlesnake had 13 rattles and they were large (your reporter saw them)!

The ponds on Orange Blossom Road have some white pelicans. They almost look like swans but they have black wings. These are very large birds that scoop up fish while swimming.

The Oakdale Rural Fire Board meeting that was to be held in the Ferry last Thursday was canceled for lack of a quorum.

Thursday, August 27th is Back to School Night at Knights Ferry School. This is an informational meeting for parents, with time set aside for each grade level except Kindergarten (they already had theirs).

Knights Ferry Grammar School Foundation will have a meeting Tuesday, September 8th at noon at the 50’s Roadhouse. Even if you do not have a child in school, you can be a Foundation member. This is a community organization that supports the school. One big fund-raiser is the 50’s Dance, held October 16th.

Linda Cassinetto held an estate sale of her mother’s things with the proceeds going to the Gardella Scholarship fund. What a great idea!

Lee and Mary Sue Shearer joined other Porsche people for a drive to Ione to tour the Preston School of Industry’s castle. The school opened in 1894 as an alternative for youthful offenders instead of San Quentin and ran until 1960, when new facilities were built by the State of California. When the castle closed, the state was going to tear it down and they let people scavenge first. Stair rails, wainscoting, moldings, fixtures etc. were taken. Then it was left to deteriorate. The Preston Castle Foundation now has a 50-year lease on the property and they are spearheading renovation. The first thing repaired was the roof as a large hole caused much damage to the interior. One interesting feature built into the castle was the fire escape. It was a very large metal tube, accessed from each floor, and the water tower atop of it provided water to the spiral slide inside so the juveniles could slide down (the first water slide!). The damage to the building was overwhelming to the group, but the docents were happy with the progress, although slow. It was an interesting day.

The Miller’s Hall October motorcycle run was put off to next year due to the chairlady’s business conflicts.
