At the Knights Ferry Community Club meeting, the “Ground Hog Dinner” was discussed. The dinner will be February 6th at the clubhouse. Doors open at 5:30. The club will provide the main dish and members will provide sides and desserts. The most important thing to bring is a “White Elephant” to raffle off. All should bring at least one item. Last year was so much fun and lots of laughs! Check around for that gift you were given that needs a new home or some “special” item. There will be a door prize. Put this date on your calendar!

Condolences go out to Sue Schlagetar on the death of her husband, Merle. They have been Knights Ferry residents for 30 years. Merle loved to square dance, fish and travel. Besides Sue, he leaves his son, Darrell and stepsons Daniel, Jeff and Scott Hilton. A celebration of his life will be January 23rd at the Oakdale Grange, corner of F Street and Lambuth, from 1:00 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Condolences also go out to Denise Crom and her family on the death of her mother and father. Her mother, Mary Lou Post of Tracy, passed December 28th and her dad, Bob Williams of Discovery Bay, passes eight days later. Needless to say that was quite a shock.

The Smokey Bear posters have been judged by the Knights Ferry Garden Club and prizes awarded. Some parents have opted not to have their children’s name in the paper so there will be gaps. First Grade- Haley Page took third place. Second Grade- Christian Baker placed second and Tatyn Silva placed third. Third Grade- Paris Thompson placed first, Eden Cassinetto placed second and Tyden Baker placed third. Fourth Grade- Megan Willis placed first, Jocelyn Burke placed second and Sergio Garcia placed third. Fifth Grade- Sage Heckinger placed first. These winners have had their posters sent for State of California judging. Congratulations to all!

There was a celebration of the life of Eda Mae Sagar at the clubhouse last Saturday. Family and friends came from the Bay Area, Seattle, and the Central Valley to tell stories of her life and toast her memory with champagne. Her daughter Gail Altieri, grandson Jason Montiel and his wife Lisa Gardiner and great grandchildren Adam and Caroline Mae Montiel, survive her.

Saturday was also the memorial for Walt Taylor, longtime Knights Ferry cowboy. The Knights Ferry I.O.O.F. Lodge performed the service in Oakdale at the Memorial Chapel, with all lodge members placing an evergreen sprig, symbol of eternal life, on the casket saying “Farewell Brother Walt, until we meet again in the Eternal Home.” Grandson Will Taylor sang a song he wrote about his grandfather. Afterwards the large crowd enjoyed a dinner at the Knights Ferry I.O.O.F. Hall where there were many pictures and a video about Walt.
