Here are some of the many things that are happening in the Ferry this March: On the 3rd is Community Club dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the clubhouse where the final plans for the March 19th Spaghetti dinner will be finalized. On Sunday, March 6th is Breakfast Sunday at the I.O.O.F. Hall on Main Street from 8-12. Tuesday, March 8th is the KF History and Museum meeting at Miller’s Hall at 9:00 a.m. where final display plans for the Civil War will be discussed. Knights Ferry Garden Club will meet at 11:00 a.m. at Café Bravo on March 9th. The KFS Board meeting is March 10th at 6:00 p.m. The Civil War reenactment is March 19th and 20th. The 26th of March is the Parent Teacher Club’s Silent/Live Auction and Dinner at the clubhouse and tickets are now on sale at school. The MAC meeting is March 24th at the clubhouse at 7:00 p.m.

Congratulations go out to Nathan Van Ryn for making the Oakdale High School 2011 Academic Decathlon competing team and winning seven medals, 2 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze at the Stanislaus County competition. The team is now preparing for the State competition in March. Way to go Nathan!

Mary Morris, mother-in-law of Carol Davis and Linda Morris and Ken Morris’s mother, celebrated her 102nd birthday with cake, ice cream and coffee at the Oak Valley Care Center. A daughter came from Las Vegas and a niece came from Colorado to help her celebrate, along with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Mike Kennedy and Cyndy Davis of Orange Blossom Road have returned from two vacations. The first was to South America that included the Amazon River area, Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands. The second was to Egypt that ended January 5th, just three weeks prior to the Egyptian Revolution! They had a great time and brought back a lot of pictures of their adventures.

At the MAC meeting, Gary Haywood from Stanislaus County Public Works told of cleaning up the fallen trees and dirt on Sonora Road and they were ready for the next storm. The standing water on Orange Blossom and Sonora Roads was brought to his attention. California Highway Patrol Officer Anthony Palazuelos said they were fully staffed with two units in this part of the county. The Community Alliance Team can be the first responder to this area in time of need, as the Sheriff Department is spread thin. Sharon Page from the KF History and Museum had the permit for the Peddlers Faire that the MAC needed to sign. The MAC is looking into a dusk to dawn light for the Plaza.

Michael and Maureen McKibban have returned from a five-day trip to New Orleans. They went to two Mardi Gras parades, one in the French Quarter that was a political satire and one in a neighborhood that was a children’s parade, with kids from 2 to 18 participating. Maureen said that every child in New Orleans must twirl a baton or play a musical instrument. Maureen collected many beads. They went to Preservation Hall and listened to real jazz! Michael and Maureen enjoyed eating at different restaurants each evening and enjoyed Café Du Monde for breakfast. A very interesting place was the Audubon Insectarium with many insect displays. The one they found most interesting was the underground exhibit, where you were an underground insect among roots, dirt and earthworms, spiders and beetles your size! There was a butterfly garden and the Cricket Diner, where Michael ate fried bugs. They walked a lot in the nice weather and saw where the floats for the parades were made. This was their third trip to New Orleans and they both are eager to go again.
