Knights Ferry News
Knights Ferry

It has been a pleasure to write about the Ferry, covering births, deaths, weddings, birthdays, school activities, MAC meetings, rattlesnakes, mountain lion sightings, Pumpkin Roll and fires. A big controversial coverage was in 1999 when Sierra Conservation Center proposed 9-mile pipeline from the prison to the Stanislaus River just above Knights Ferry. The pipe would carry treated sewage water from the prison. The river intake for Knights Ferry water was just downstream from where they wanted to dump their effluent. Knights Ferry was up in arms and attended many meetings. The prison found another place to dump their water.

Another big event was the installation of a new water treatment plant and tanks that tripled the capacity for the town water. Also a biggie was the post office reopening with Dolly Haskell as postmistress.

Last Tuesday night saw a fire roar from the river up the hill to Hunter’s property. The ‘50s Roadhouse, covered bridge and homes on Shuper Road and Kennedy Road were threatened and had fire truck stationed close to them. It started in the river bottom by humans. There were a lot of people watching the flames burn the grass and trees. Wednesday morning the fire department was on scene for clean-up. After watching the Mariposa fire, everyone was nervous for the town. Thank you go out to the firemen!

If you target practice, please watch where your bullets go. A home on Frymire had one in their wall!
