This is the time of year that schools in the Oakdale Joint Unified School District get a deep cleaning. Floors are stripped and waxed, carpets are shampooed, every desk and chair is cleaned top and bottom, bathrooms are scrubbed, walls and blinds are washed. Once the maintenance crews are done, the rooms and offices even smell clean. Plus, exterior walls and sidewalks are pressure washed and trees are trimmed.
OJUSD Director of Maintenance and Operations Dan Casey reported on a number of projects that have been going on at the schools throughout the summer.
He said that at Oakdale High School the main hall boys and girls restrooms are being remodeled to be ADA (American Disabilities Act) compliant. The new sports field prefabricated bathroom building is set and in place, now electrical and fire alarm connections are being made to the main campus. Casey added that all the trees along Gilbert Avenue and J Street are being trimmed up to 15 feet to accommodate busses. There is also a mulberry tree with a large stress fracture that was just removed on the campus near Gilbert. He also said that two new tennis courts are being constructed just adjacent on the south side of the current four courts that are in place along Gilbert, which will allow for league matches. The tennis court project includes new asphalt and court painting, fencing, and curbing. The project will be completed before school starts in August. The shade structure in the courtyard area at the high school has been delayed until some re-engineering is done. Pipes that the district was unaware of were found underground during the process of digging.
At Sierra View Elementary School, lead custodian Robert Nunn said that on a normal day he has a three-man crew working on the campus. They have 31 classrooms, plus six center rooms in the classroom pods, offices, bathrooms, library, and the cafeteria/multi purpose room to clean.
“Summertime you get down, you get dirty,” Nunn said. “You break your normal routine. It’s fun, I enjoy it.”
Just prior to the July 4th holiday, Nunn and custodian Jesus Rios were pressure washing the buildings and sidewalks, cleaning carpets, and stripping and waxing floors, amongst other cleaning duties.
Casey added that a new, updated phone system is being installed at Cloverland Elementary School, and that they are doing a crack fill and slurry coat of surfaces at Magnolia and Fair Oaks elementary schools. He noted that at all the campuses there are the maintenance odds and ends of floor polishing, touch up painting, and reseeding of play fields to get them back in shape before the students return.
Also, as reported in the July 1 issue of The Leader, Oakdale Junior High School’s classroom construction project is moving along on schedule and is expected to be complete in March 2010.
