What are Oakdale High School students wearing to the prom this year? A recent prom fashion show, a first-time event for OHS and planned by students in the leadership class, held in the school gym on March 15 during lunchtime gave students some ideas and resources for the special evening.

“The primary objective of the event is to get more people interested in prom while simultaneously giving them options for dresses and tuxes,” explained OHS leadership PR commissioner Hayley Benson.

Twenty OHS leadership students volunteered to be models, taking time for fittings prior to the show, and then stepping up to the runway to show off prom fashions while DJ “Rockin’ Rod” played music. Ten girls modeled dresses from Soiree by Sophia and 10 boys modeled tuxedos from Men’s Wearhouse.

“We’ve been working on this for about four weeks and trying to get people (vendors) to come,” said leadership student and event co-chair McKenna Cramer.

At the event were booths representing local flower shop A Touche of Flowers, dress shop Soiree by Sophia, which also rents tuxedos, and Men’s Wearhouse, all of which are offering OHS prom specials or discounts, and also Oakdale Center For Human Services (CHS). CHS is accepting gently used dresses from people who want to donate to the CHS “Prom Closet,” which provides a way for underprivileged students to “shop” for their prom apparel more affordably.

OHS Vice Principal Diana Crofts said that OHS staff had been meeting with Men’s Wearhouse to see if discounts could be made available to the students and they came up with the idea for a fashion show. Then other vendors were invited to participate in the fashion show to help let students know what’s available in the area.

Students who attended the prom fashion show event were also able to put their names into a drawing to win free prom tickets. The winners of the raffle were Brittney Ryan and Janki Mistry, who each received two free prom tickets. The OHS prom is on Saturday, April 20. Tickets are $35 per person, and there is a $5 discount with an ASB card.
