Benefit Triathlon Saturday At OHS

The Oakdale High School “Get Amped” Club will sponsor the second annual Kim Stogdell Memorial Triathlon on the OHS campus on Saturday, Sept. 21, beginning at 5 p.m.

The race will be a modified triathlon, beginning at the Mustang Aquatic Center where individuals will swim 10 laps. Competitors will next execute a three-mile bicycle ride around the OHS campus (competitors must provide their own bicycles). At the completion of the bicycle ride, the participants will run one-mile around OHS. A free ice cream social will be offered at the conclusion of the event.

The event honors the memory of the late Kim Stogdell, a popular OHS counselor who passed away as a result of cancer in the summer of 2012. All proceeds from the event will be given to the Kim Stogdell Memorial Scholarship Fund, an annual scholarship that will be awarded in May.

People have two participation options. They can either do the event as individuals, participating in all three events, or as a three-person relay team where each entrant participates in one event. Medals will be awarded to the top three individual female and male finishers and to the top three teams. Teams can be all-male, all-female, or mixed gender; however, medal awards will simply be presented to the top three finishing teams.

Entry fees are $10 per person on the three-person teams and $15 for those who participate as individuals. Students from Oakdale Junior High School and OHS, as well as adults, are invited to participate. Also invited are people who do not wish to compete but would like to make donations, assist in the management of the event, or cheer on favorite participants.

The OHS Get Amped Club is in its third year of operation. The club’s focus is on promoting healthy living through proper diet, exercise and living habits. OHS English teacher Kelly Olson and OHS social studies teacher Pete Simoncini serve as the club’s co-advisors.

Triathlon participants must provide their own swimsuits, bicycles and other event clothing. Entry forms and waiver forms are posted on the OHS website, http://ohs-ojusd-ca.schoolloop.com/, or may be picked up in classroom E-3 at OHS.
