Oakdale police detectives arrested a 29-year-old Valley Springs man on July 31 on an array of sexual assault charges after an investigation revealed the man had sexual relationship with a 14-year-old Oakdale girl he met on a messaging app.

Police Detective Aaron Beatty said the girl’s parents became aware of the relationship and immediately contacted police who initiated an investigation.

“It came to the parent’s realization and they came to us,” Beatty said. “The girl reported having a relationship with the man for several months.”

Beatty said the suspect met the victim on the messaging app Badoo a few months ago and began exchanging messages which developed into the liaisons.
Badoo is a dating-focused social networking service that allows its members to chat, upload photos and videos and contact people who live in their area or have similar interests.

Detective Sergeant Joe Johnson said the victim’s grandmother called police around 2:40 early that morning reporting that an unknown individual was locked in the young girl’s bedroom. When police arrived they found Campbell in the room and arrested him. Police at that time learned of the on-going sexual relationship.

Johnson also said detectives obtained a search warrant for Campbell’s cell phone for forensic analysis.

Campbell was arrested for continuous sexual abuse of a minor, lewd and lascivious acts with a minor, and oral copulation with a minor. He remains in custody at Stanislaus County Jail on $250,000 bail.
