Coming up in just a few weeks, it’s the annual Burchell Hill garage sale day, with dozens of residents in the neighborhood joining the sale.

“It’s always the first Saturday in May,” spokesman Michael Hancock said.

This year that will be on May 4 and Hancock said he anticipates about 80 homes throughout the area to have sales that day.

“We always say it starts at 8 a.m., but you know how garage sales go; people are here at 6 a.m., trying to get a deal,” he added, chuckling. “It is the biggest garage sale in Oakdale, for sure, we get a crowd up here.”

He believes part of the success through the years has been the organizational effort; the Neighborhood Watch group takes on the task of sending out registration forms to everyone in the neighborhood. Those that return them with the fee are then provided with the permits required to host a sale in the city.

This will be the 22nd year for the Burchell Hill sale; there is no formal end time, though Hancock said it starts to slow down in the early afternoon.

“It has been very successful from the start,” he said. “We go out of our way to make it easy for people to participate.”
