Average gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 4.0 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.28/gallon on Sept. 22, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Prices in Modesto are 4.6 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 42.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has increased 0.7 cents compared to a week ago and stands at $3.66 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $3.94/gallon while the most expensive was $5.09, a difference of $1.15/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.55 while the highest was $6.79, a difference of $3.24/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has risen 2.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.14/gallon on Sept. 22. The national average is unchanged from a month ago and stands 1.8 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

“The national average saw a slight increase last week, primarily driven by states that experienced price cycling just ahead of the switch back to winter gasoline,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Florida, Ohio, Michigan, and Maryland — all states known for routine price cycling — saw double-digit jumps to average gas prices. Now that much of the nation has begun the transition to cheaper winter gasoline and with driving demand seasonally tapering off as temperatures dip, gas prices face additional downward pressure. We’re still on track to potentially see the national average fall below $3 per gallon for the first time in years this autumn.”

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back 10 years show the highest Sept. 22 average price in Modesto was $5.37 per gallon in 2023 while the lowest was $2.62 in 2016. The highest U.S. average of $3.84 per gallon was recorded on Sept. 22, 2023 and the lowest of $2.20 per gallon was recorded in 2020.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.37/gallon, down 6.2 cents from last week’s $4.43; Oakland - $4.59, down 1.6 cents from $4.61; and San Jose - $4.53, down 0.3 cents from last week’s $4.53/gallon.
