Vern and Phyllis Gomes celebrated their 60th anniversary on July 4, 2009 by repeating their vows before a large group of friends and family. The ceremony took place at Oakdale community Church, followed by a reception at the Masonic Hall.
The couple met at church when Vern was getting his training for the Ministry. A whirlwind courtship followed (March to July). They were married on July 3, 1949 in Turlock, Vern’s birthplace.
In the fall of that year, they returned to Eugene, Oregon (Phyllis’ home) and site of University of Oregon and Bible School for Vern. Vern pastored churches in Oregon and California and Phyllis earned her Teaching Credential after their four children were older.
They retired to Oakdale.
