In recent action against Valley Oak League opponents, the varsity volleyball girls took down East Union and Patterson.
It was a 3-1 win for Oakdale against East Union on Sept. 24, defeating the Lancers 25-13, 25-10, 18-25, 25-22. Notching 11 kills apiece in the match were Samantha Blanc and Sophia Leslie, while Payton Wilson had 17 digs and Laya Cofer had 10.
In the Sept. 28 match against Patterson, it was a straight sets win on the road for Oakdale. They shut down the host Tigers 25-16, 25-20, 25-8.
Cofer had 10 kills in the contest, McKenna Port logged 12 assists.
The varsity improved to 6-2 in VOL play with the victories.
CROSS COUNTRY
Oakdale runners took part in the Golden Eagle Invitational on Friday, Sept. 25. It was hosted at Woodward Park in Fresno.
The varsity girls, as a team, captured first place in the 5k race, small school division, for the fourth year in a row.
Leading the way was Addison Wylie, second overall in 19:27. She was followed by Kylie Fast, fifth, 20:09; Tenley Wylie, sixth, 20:22; Taylor Reams, ninth, 21:24; Elise McGhee, 16th, 22:15; Kinsley Alves, 19th, 22:29; Zeidy Cornejo, 39th, 24:29.
The varsity boys finished in third place overall in the small school division 5k race. They were paced by the first place overall showing of Weston McGhee, who ran the course in 15:46, the fastest time of the day out of any race in the competition.
Trevor Powell finished in 11th place, 16:51; followed by Ezekiel Perez, 23rd, 17:45; Roman Moreno, 49th, 18:52; Alan Covarrubias, 52nd, 18:57; and Coltyn Renault, 60th overall, 19:04.
“It was a very hot day on the course. We were missing two of our regular varsity boys which hurt us in the team standings,” noted head coach Guy Fowler. “Some good performances on the State Meet Course.”
Runners were scheduled to compete in the Valley Oak League Meet #2 at Mistlin Park in Ripon on Sept. 30.
FLAG FOOTBALL
It was a couple of tough losses on the gridiron for the varsity Lady Mustangs flag football team. They took on Patterson on Sept. 23 and found themselves on the wrong end of a 27-7 decision. Then, it was a Sept. 28 contest against Manteca and the Oakdale girls were shut out in that contest, 31-0.
