With a few Valley Oak League contests now in the mix, a number of Oakdale teams are in the thick of competition for their fall campaign. Here is a look at some of the recent action.
WATER POLO
Oakdale’s varsity Lady Mustangs lost a Sept. 16 decision to Turlock, 12-6, but then earned a win in tournament play, 11-3, over Ripon on Sept. 18. They also fell in a pair of tournament contests, 20-8 to El Capitan and by a 14-13 final to Bear Creek.
The varsity boys had just one match on their schedule this past week, losing in a Sept. 16 contest to Turlock by a 16-3 decision. The Bulldogs scored three goals in the first and seven in the second to lead Oakdale by a 10-1 score midway through the contest, then outscored the Mustangs 6-2 over the third and fourth quarters to take the win.
CROSS COUNTRY
At the Frogtown Invitational hosted Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds, the JV boys earned first place honors as a team in the two-mile Division 1-5 race, which featured 145 runners.
Finishing in first place overall in the race was Ezekiel Perez, sophomore, 11:32; followed by Alan Covarrubias sophomore, fourth place, 12:09; Coltyn Renault, senior, 10th place, 12:28; Brayden Silva, sophomore, 12th place, 12:32; Estevan Perez, freshman, 24th place, 13:10.
“We did not run a lot of our varsity runners; it would have been their third race in eight days,” said head coach Guy Fowler. “We had a really good showing with our JV boys. Obviously, winning the race is great but more importantly we are developing some depth which is important as the season goes along.”
Next race for the Mustangs will be the Golden Eagle Invitational, set for Friday, Sept. 25 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
VOLLEYBALL
For the varsity volleyball girls, they crafted a pair of Valley Oak League wins, as they defeated Central Catholic on Sept. 16, 3-2, on the road and defeated Manteca in a road game on Sept. 21 by a 3-1 final.
In the five-set victory over Central, Oakdale dropped the first set, 23-25, then came back to win the second, 25-20 but then lost the third 23-25. They regrouped and took the next two to seal the win, 25-20, 15-11.
The JV girls were 2-0 winners over Central and 2-0 winners over Manteca and the freshmen took a 2-1 decision off the court against Central Catholic.
FLAG FOOTBALL
Against Sierra on Sept. 16, the varsity flag football girls lost a 39-7 decision.
TENNIS
In a pair of VOL matches, the varsity girls split their contests on the tennis court. They earned a 6-0 win over Central Catholic on Sept. 15 but lost a 5-4 decision to Sierra on Sept. 17.
