Riverbank’s first Mother Lode League game of the football season didn’t go quite according to plan, as they were roughed up by Linden, falling 35-7 to the Lions.
The league opener was on Friday, Sept. 25 and though the teams were tied 7-7 after one quarter, that’s the only time Riverbank would get into the end zone. The Lions, meanwhile, put up 21 points in the second quarter to lead it 28-7 at the half and they added a final touchdown in the third for the 35-7 final.
Scoring for the Bruins was Daniel Orunja, who had 19 carries for 61 yards and a touchdown on the night offensively, as well as a team-leading 10 tackles on the defensive side.
Cody Martin completed one pass on the night, a 13-yard toss to Jackson Hammond, while Martin also had three carries for 22 yards. Jamie Gabert added 14 carries for 53 yards; Lucien Hodge had 12 carries for 37 yards and added a fumble recovery. Adrian Fernandez put the extra point through the uprights after the touchdown by Orunja.
The Bruins will host Big Valley Christian for Homecoming on Friday, Oct. 2.
FLAG FOOTBALL
On Sept. 23, the Lady Bruins came away with a big road win, 33-0, against Gustine. But they fell to River Islands, 32-0, in a road game on Sept. 28.
In the victory, Summer Mitre had four catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns while quarterback Briseida Felix was 12-for-22 for 210 yards, completing three touchdown passes. Hazel Hughes had eight catches for 118 yards and a touchdown.
CROSS COUNTRY
Competing at the Woodbridge Invitational in Irvine, there were a few standouts for the Bruin cross country squads.
In the Senior Boys-White Division, Armando Garcia claimed first place overall honors on the three-mile course in 15:32.1, a personal best.
In the three-mile Sophomore Girls-White Division, Zuri Golding – a freshman running up a level – was first overall in 19:53.1, setting her personal best.
Sophomore Giancarlo Reyes ran a strong three-mile race in the Sophomore Boys event, taking fifth overall in a personal best time of 16:13.3.
Runners were scheduled to travel to Calaveras High School for the Mother Lode League Meet #2 on Sept. 30.
VOLLEYBALL
Taking the court for a pair of Mother Lode League contests, both went in the loss column this past week for Riverbank’s varsity girls volleyball team.
They fell at home to visiting Summerville, 3-0, on Sept. 22 and then were on the road at Calaveras, defeated there on Sept 24 in a 3-0 straight sets loss.
The girls were to host Linden on Sept. 29 and will be at Big Valley Christian on Oct. 1.
