The 2018 fall sports season is upon us and Oakdale High School teams have returned to the court, pool, course and, for cross country, wide open spaces. This past week a handful of Mustang programs held scrimmages to get ready for their season openers.

Lady Mustang golfers got back in the swing of things on Tuesday, Aug. 14 when they hosted Livingston in a scrimmage. The girls followed up with a scrimmage on Thursday, Aug. 16 against Gregori. Oakdale opens up Valley Oak League action when the girls head to Modesto to take on Central Catholic on Monday, Aug. 27. However, the girls still have a few non-league contests to go through first. This week the girls host Rocklin on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at Oakdale Golf and Country Club at 3 p.m. The following day the team travel to Pleasant Grove.

Friday, Aug. 17 cross country held its team scrimmage at Oakdale High School where nearly 60 runners ran one and a third miles around the school campus. Under the direction of Head coach Guy Fowler, along with coaches Lori Vargas and Vic Moreno, the teams were broken down into two groups (boys and girls) outside of the agriculture building. This was the team’s only home meet of the year.

“Our goal is to get better each day. We have some impressive guys and girls out here and they want to improve each day,” said Coach Fowler.

Oakdale’s girls tennis season began with scrimmage action on Tuesday, Aug. 21 when they traveled to Pacheco. The girls will host Turlock on Thursday, Aug. 23 for their final scrimmage of the season. This contest is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Aug. 28 the team’s season opens when they travel to Manteca to take on East Union. The girls will then host Kimball on Thursday, Aug. 30.

Boys and girls water polo held scrimmages this past week. Coach Diane Kline is pulling double duty again this year as she is the head coach for both varsity programs. The girls hosted their annual scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 18 while the boys headed to Atwater for a scrimmage over this past weekend. For the girls team, they will compete in the Central Valley Showdown in Clovis this weekend. On Tuesday, Sept. 4 the girls host Rio Americano in league play. As for the boys they will be off until Wednesday, Sept. 5 when they travel to take on Vintage.

Volleyball girls are getting set for their season as they traveled to Hughson to take on the Huskies in non-league action Tuesday, Aug. 21. The road contest took place following The Leader’s press time. The girls continue non-league play when they travel to Sonora on Thursday, Aug. 23. Oakdale will have their home opener on Tuesday, Aug. 28 against Escalon. Coaching the varsity girls team will be Heather Gonzales, junior varsity will be coached by Jackee Peterson and Kendra Whorton is the freshman coach.
