Rotary Classic Tips Off For Holidays
Rotary

For nearly five decades, the Oakdale Rotary Club has hosted the Oakdale Rotary Classic for boys basketball. This year, the holiday hoops tradition is scheduled for Wednesday through Friday, Dec. 26 through 28, inside the Oakdale High School main gym for both varsity and junior varsity basketball.

Downey, Delhi, Pitman, Ripon Christian, Buhach Colony, Hughson and Davis will all be a part of the tournament this season along with the host Mustangs.

Since 1969, Bob Meyer has been a member of the Oakdale Rotary Club and in 1972 Meyer became the president of the club.

“I’ve been the chairman of the tournament since 1971 and it is a great way for the players to play against schools they don’t play during the regular season. It is a great way to prepare before the regular season starts,” said Meyer.

Oakdale junior varsity tips off at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26 when they take on Davis. Varsity is scheduled to cap off the night when they take on Davis at 8 p.m. The cost of admission is set at $7 for adults, students with I.D. is $3, seniors $4 and children under seven are free.

“One hundred percent of the proceeds go to the high school basketball program,” said Meyer.

The tournament is run and supported by many different people. Costless Grocery Store donates food that is prepared by Bob’s wife, Linda.

“She makes the food and distributes it to the coaches, staff and officials each year. It takes time but it is very much appreciated by everyone because it is really an all-day tournament, for three days,” Meyer noted.

Sponsors are still being sought and can reach varsity head coach Hondo Arpoika via email at harpoika@ojusd.org.
