Tuesday night was a celebratory evening for the varsity girls soccer team. Oakdale (4-16, 2-11) defeated visiting Weston Ranch (1-15-1, 0-12-0) by a final of 2-0. Prior to the game, coaches, parents, and fans celebrated the five seniors for their dedication and achievements in the program. Seniors Isabella Cobarruvias, Amelia Hernandez, Alyssa Rowe, Makenzie Perez and Megan Miller were all honored at midfield of the OHS Corral. Presented with flowers, balloons and candy, the girls took in their final pregame ceremony at home.

“This is exciting; I am excited to play our final home game. As a four-year varsity player, this has been a great experience and I have enjoyed my time with the program,” Cobarruvias said.

The Lady Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead and that was enough to earn their second Valley Oak League win of the season. Scoring for Oakdale were Cobarruvias and Viviana Albor; both goals were unassisted. Megan Miller and Meaghen Humphrey combined to earn the shutout as neither netminder gave up a goal.

First year varsity coach Grace Fernandez used the famous Mia Hamm quote to summarize her senior players: “Take your victories, whatever they may be. Cherish them, use them but don’t settle for them.”

Thursday night the girls went to Kimball to take on the Jags (7-13-2, 5-6-2) in Tracy. This time Oakdale was on the wrong side of a 2-0 shutout. Tuesday, Feb. 14 the girls were scheduled to wrap up the season at Central Catholic (12-4-2, 9-2-1) following The Leader’s press time.
