Tennis Boys Serve Up League Win

Oakdale High School’s boys tennis team opened up the Valley Oak League season with a pair of road matches.

In their season opener, Oakdale defeated East Union 9-0. In singles action all six Mustangs won in straight sets. Angel Padilla opened his season as the number one singles and won 6-3, 6-4. Liam Peters took care of business with a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Oakdale’s Ludvig Westberg, exchange student from Sweden who played football this past season, won 6-3, 6-1. Frankie Dutra only allowed one win to his opponent on the day as he prevailed 6-1, 6-0. Marc Chavez earned a hard fought 6-3, 6-2 road win and Shivam Mistry won 6-1, 6-4.

In doubles action the team of Matt Kjeldgaard and Chris Frye won 6-1, 6-0. Aaron Lowe/Brady Noel and Jordan Kraude/Jose Santos both won via forfeit for Oakdale.

Thursday afternoon was a different story for the Mustangs as they fell to Kimball 6-3. In singles action CJ Toledo was the only victorious Mustang as he won 6-3, (2-6) 10-7. Padilla, Peters, Westberg, Dutra and Chavez all came up short in their matches against the host Jaguars. In doubles Kjeldgaard and Frye won their second straight match to start the season when they won in three sets 6-4, (3-6), 6-2. Noel and Krude were also victorious with a 7-6, 6-1 win.

“We may not have beaten Kimball, but that was a close match, so next time we could turn a few matches around and get them,” said Mustangs head coach Grant Miller. “It is nice to see that we played so well against one of the class programs of our league.”

Tuesday, March 13 the Mustangs home opener against Lathrop was cancelled due weather. No makeup date has been announced. This week Oakdale will travel to Manteca to take on Sierra on Thursday, March 15 and will continue to play on the road at Central Catholic on Tuesday, March 20. All matches are scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
