Two weeks into the Valley Oak League schedule, Oakdale High’s girls tennis team sports a spotless record with four wins over conference foes.
They dropped Lathrop in an 8-1 landslide on Sept. 15 after singles wins from Lindsay Dunn (6-0, 6-0), Nicole Armstrong (6-0 6-3), Alejandra Martinez (6-0, 6-0), Emily Johnson (6-2, 6-2) and Kalkidan Curtis (6-1, 6-1).
Katie Odom and Laurie Baxter led doubles play with 6-0 blowouts while Corin Hernandez and Taylor Davis landed 6-0, 6-1 wins. Francesca Orvis and Nicole Dickens tallied 6-0 wins as well.
“We haven’t started to play our best yet, but we are improving,” Oakdale coach Judy Vejar said. “I still believe as a team, we are the strongest. The girls are trying so hard. They are such a great bunch of girls.”
Cross Country
Oakdale’s varsity programs were busy posting 3-4 finishes from the first run of conference meets during a VOL cluster meet on Sept. 14 in Frogtown.
Oakdale’s frosh-soph girls landed a 7-0 stanza of wins, while the frosh-soph boys went 6-1.
The varsity boys were paced by a top time from Mario Jimenez (15th, 19 minutes, 20 seconds) on the 5,000-meter course.
Liz Erwin led the varsity girls with an eighth place finish and 23:47 time on the same course.
Mike Chapin (seventh), Denise Thompson (first) and Alexis Halsey (second) led the frosh-soph programs.
“We are learning a lot each meet we compete in,” Oakdale coach Guy Fowler said. “We have to have a better (varsity) performance at the next VOL Cluster meet if we want to be in the top three in league.
“I am very pleased with the frosh-soph girls team. They just keep running and do not worry about anything else.”
Volleyball
Oakdale opened the Valley Oak League schedule with a three-game sweep of Lathrop in 25-8, 25-12, 25-17 scores on Sept. 15.
McKenzie Willett delivered nine kills while Domi Powell sent home four kills with 13 service points. Kellie Gratigny added 18 points, 16 assists and six digs.
