On Friday and Saturday, Jan. 9 and 10, Oakdale split off into two groups and competed in the Doc Buchanan Invitational in Clovis, while another group of grapplers stayed local and battled it out at the Lloyd Engel Tournament in Escalon.

In Clovis, three Oakdale wrestlers battled their way to top 10 finishes. Senior Nico Colunga (122) finished third in his weight class. Freshman Jake Ryan (147) continued to impress as he finished sixth in his weight class. Finally, sophomore Abel Garcia (172) is also off to a promising start this year as he also finished in sixth place.

Meanwhile in Escalon, five wrestlers finished with top five honors in their respective weight classes. Finishing with third place honors were Carlos Lopez (106); Logan Eaton (120) and Cedric Vierra (220). Wyatt Hjelm (220) took fourth place. Earning an honorable mention was Bronson Harmon (152) who finished in the top five of the B Bracket where he placed fourth in his weight class.

Oakdale will host its first Valley Oak League match on Wednesday, Jan. 14 when the eight time defending VOL champs welcome in Kimball and Sierra. Matches are set to begin at 4 p.m.
