Mustang Sports Teams Gearing Up For Winter

Oakdale High School welcomes soccer to the winter slate of Mustang sports this season. Both the boys and girls will be suiting up for the winter.

Coaching the varsity boys will be longtime coach Alfredo Quiroga with assistant coach Hector Padilla. Oakdale begins scrimmage play at Gregori on Nov. 21 and will host Enochs on Friday, Nov. 25 for their first non-league contest. The game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The boys open the regular season at home when they host Manteca on Monday, Nov. 12. The Mustangs won the Valley Oak League last season with a 10-1-3 record. Jaime Martinez returns as junior varsity boys head coach.

Former junior varsity coach Grace Fernandes will now be coaching the varsity girls program this winter. Fernandes and the Lady Mustangs begin their season on the road at Turlock on Thursday, Dec. 1. Oakdale begins Valley Oak League action on the road against Manteca on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

A decade of destruction continues as the dominant wrestling team returns to the mats. Oakdale has claimed the Valley Oak League championship 10 straight times and last year captured their eighth straight Section Dual banner. This feat ties them for the all-time record. In the same timespan the boys have won nine straight Divisionals.

Returning to the team are state medalists Ricky Torres and Abel Garcia along with state qualifiers Bronson Harmon, Dustin Chavez, Jake Abeyta and Colbey Harlan. Wrestling action begins with the first major tournament of the year, Rumble for the Rig at Bakersfield High School on Saturday, Dec 3. Oakdale hosts the 41st Annual James Riddle Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 10.

The Mustangs return to the hardwood this winter where they hope to turn up the heat. Second year varsity boys basketball coach Hondo Arpoika and his new staff of Assistant Coach Bobby Monges, Joe Peterson, Jack Strand, Kelly Powers and Charles Leagan look to turn the team around. The Mustangs open the season on the road against Escalon in non-league play. The Valley Oak League season is set to start Tuesday, Jan. 3 in a home game against Sierra. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Don Muniz returns as head coach of the junior varsity boys with Jeff Hanrahan serving as assistant coach. Grant Miller along with Jake Stevens and Kevin Leach will be coaching the freshman boys.

Oakdale girls basketball tips off on Monday, Nov. 28 against Sonora in the Foundation Game. The girls will be coached by Julie Ford, assisting coach Ford will be Murrel Esparza. Oakdale travels to Sierra for the league opener on Wednesday, Jan. 4. Oakdale’s junior varsity girls will be coached by Cheri Martin and Gary Smith will return to coach the freshman girls.
