Mustang Dozen Advance To Wrestling Masters
OHS Mustangs

This past weekend Oakdale traveled to River Valley High School to compete in the Sac-Joaquin Section DIII Championships. With high expectations, the Mustangs did not disappoint and have qualified 12 wrestlers to compete in the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters at the Stockton Arena on Feb. 23 and 24.

During the tournament at Yuba City, Oakdale crowned eight champions: Brayden Abell (106), Clayton Bashor (113), Henry Porter (120), Ricky Torres (138), Jake Ryan (145), Gabe Martinez (170), Cody Golding (182) and Colbey Harlan (195).

Abell, a freshman, went 3-0 as he won his first bout via forfeit then defeated Ethan Cota of Vista de Lago via fall and then defeated fellow freshman Jordan Sorgman.

Oakdale’s youth continued to impress when freshman Clayton Bashor also went 3-0 and won his championship. Bashor won his first two bouts via fall then defeated Tyler Diaz of East Union in the finals via a 7-1 decision. Henry Porter, also a freshman, dominated his bracket by going 3-0 and wining all three via fall/technical fall. Porter defeated Bryce Newland, Dylan Ahem and junior Dylan Duncan 16-1 to become champion. The Mustangs’ fourth freshman in the tournament, Seth Borba claimed second place honors in the 132 pound division. Borba defeated Trever Hagy and Erik Johnson to qualify in the finals. However, Borba ran into senior Chris Valencia in the finals and fell by an 11-3 final.

Junior Ricky Torres made short work of his opposition as he went 3-0 to become champion. Torres knocked off Trevor Thorton, Zach Robles and Isaias Martinez via first period fall.

Senior Jake Ryan is making the most of his final days in the Mustang program. The decorated grappler went 3-0 and defeated Mason Walters, Jackson Mitchell and fellow senior Adan Nava.

Junior Gabe Martinez won all three of his matches via fall. He defeated Luis Leon, Jacob Scott and out worked Miguel Cervantes to win his 170 pound division.

Cody Golding, a junior, punched his ticket to compete at the Masters following a 3-0 weekend. Golding defeated Ben Goodwin, Liam Leckie and senior Sam Justo all via fall.

Colbey Harlan, who is undefeated this season, continued his winning ways and went 3-0 to claim the championship. Harlan defeated Nate George, David Fowler and Luigi Young, all via first period falls.

Senior Jorge Barajas (220) reached the finals but was overmatched by senior Dylan Amos to finish second. Fellow senior Dakota McNeil (152) also punched his ticket for Masters as he placed fourth place and junior Justin Jericoff (160) finished third and will compete this weekend.

Wrestling action begins Friday, Feb. 23 at Stockton Arena with finals taking place Saturday afternoon, Feb. 24
