Lady Mustangs Squads Play To Mixed Results

Approaching the midway point of the fall Valley Oak League schedule for the Oakdale Lady Mustangs, Oakdale’s golf, volleyball and tennis teams were all in action this past week. Following is a recap of the action.

 

GOLF

In the team’s lone performance of the week, Oakdale improved to 8-0 on the year after defeating Lathrop 179-312. The Lady Mustangs traveled to face off with Lathrop at the Jack Tone Golf Course on Tuesday, Sept. 20. With par set at 31, Oakdale’s Madi Blanc was on par as she shot 31 on the day. Three strokes behind her was Taylor Stewart. Rounding out the team effort were Makayla Christiansen (36) with Allie Denning and Andrea York each scoring 39. Oakdale returns home for a four game stretch at Oakdale Golf and Country Club. The four game home stand begins today, Wednesday Sept. 28 when Oakdale hosts Weston Ranch. Little rest in between as Oakdale will host Manteca on Thursday, Sept. 29. Oakdale will also play both Monday and Tuesday against Sierra and East Union. All matches are set for 3 p.m.

 

VOLLEYBALL

A split between Valley Oak League contests this past week for Oakdale (3-3, 3-1). On Monday, Sept. 19 the Lady Mustangs fell in five sets to Kimball (8-7, 4-0). The marathon battle saw Oakdale drop the first set 14-25. Second year coach Heather Gonzalez regrouped her team and Oakdale won back-to-back sets (25-10, 25-18). Unfortunately for the Lady Mustangs, Kimball answered with wining the fourth and fifth sets 20-25, 12-25. Two days later, the Lady Mustangs went to East Union (2-4, 2-2) to face the Lancers. It took Oakdale four sets to put away the host team, but with the win Oakdale is currently in second place in the VOL. Oakdale took the first two sets 25-17, 25-20 before falling in the third set 20-25 but they came back and got the victory with a 25-16 win in set four. Oakdale won the contest thanks to big defensive efforts by Isabella Cobarruvias, Samantha Nickerson, Jodie Whitley and Ashley Moreno all having two blocks. Cobarruvias also added 30 assists, and four aces in the win. Marisella Nichols had 29 digs in the win. Oakdale hosts Central Catholic (9-4, 2-1) today, Wednesday Sept. 28 and travel to Lathrop (1-9, 1-3) on Monday, Oct. 3.

 

TENNIS

Like their counterparts on the volleyball team, Oakdale tennis players split their two matches this past week. On Tuesday, Sept. 20 Oakdale fell to Sierra on the road 7-2; but rebounded against Central Catholic on Thursday, Sept. 22 with a 7-2 win. Against Sierra, it was Oakdale’s number one Tal Talamentes who won in straight sets 7-5, 6-0. Also victorious was Maddy Brewer in singles with a three set victory over Carly Conial 6-3, 1-6, 6-1. Oakdale went to Modesto and took care of Central Catholic as five singles were victorious to help lift Oakdale to the win. Talamentes, Brewer, Carly Newbill, Danika Brown and Kendall Kiely all walked away with singles wins. The tandem of McKenzie Brown and Lijian Bacud won in straight sets 6-1, 6-3; while Oakdale’s Breanna Morgan and Tayla Barry won in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 10-5. On Saturday, Sept. 24 Barry competed at the Novice Tournament in Manteca and took first place in singles with an 8-6 win over Manteca’s Melissa Pontini. Oakdale next travels to play Weston Ranch on Thursday, Sept. 29.
