Fishing Report

One of my first bait casting reels cost me less than $50 back in the early ‘80s. As time went on, the price of bait casting reels continued to rise. I’m guessing it was in the early ‘90s when the prices of a mid- to high-quality bait casting reel had a price tag of $100. Today, a reel of the same quality, sells for $200. Like a lot of you, it’s frustrating to have to pay such high prices for decent fishing equipment. Not anymore, there are some really good resources online that can be used to find good quality equipment. It may not be named brand, but there are enough reviews of these products to ensure that you’re purchasing something other than a name. I recently purchased two reels for less than half the cost of some of my favorite reels and have been more than impressed with the quality and design. While watching a YouTube video a few weeks ago, the individual in the video had high praise for his reels, so I decided to do a little more research on them. After reading all the reviews, I decided to give the reels a try and so far, they’ve exceeded my expectations. With fishing equipment, time will tell if my money was well spent. I’m tough on my fishing equipment! For those that want to check out the reels, the brand is KastKing.

Delta Report:

Water temperatures have been in the high seventies to low eighties. The reaction bite for largemouth bass has been good lately especially when the wind breaks up the surface. During the day the frog bite has been really good as there are plenty of mats found in most major sloughs. Catfishing remains good during the evening hours and bluegill can still be found in bunches along the shallows.

New Melones Lake:

Kokanee fishing continues to be hit or miss for a lot of anglers trolling. At night, anglers are doing well while fishing for trout around the bridge while using submersible lights with live minnows and power bait. Bluegill are being found right now in the backs of coves and caught by those using worms for bait. Catfish are being caught all over the lake right now but mostly from the shore during the night on anchovies and clams. Bass fishing continues to be good for numbers as many bass can be found in schools off points and main lake structure.

Don Pedro:

Bass are being caught as deep as 20 feet during the day with jigs and on top water baits early in the morning and evening hours. Kokanee are being caught as deep as 100 feet during the day by trollers. Bluegills continue to provide steady action for those fishing small worms under a bobber around shoreline cover.

Lake Pardee:

Fishing for bass has been fair to good as there are still a lot of fish to be caught up shallow on shaky head worms. There is also a lot of schooling activity to be found on the lake right now as a drop shotted Robo worm through visible schools of fish has been producing numbers.

Lake Amador:

Fishing continues to be slow during the day for anglers fishing for bass and trout. Bluegills have been biting during the day on small worms in the backs of coves and around the dam area. Bass have been pushing the shad into the backs of coves and can be found feeding close to the bank. Bass are being caught at night on spinnerbaits, buzz baits, jigs, and brush hogs. At night, some trout are being caught near the dam while fishing under a submersible light.

Tip of The Week:

Just when I thought that I knew everything about superglue, I learn something new. Superglue has many uses, from closing a wound, to fixing the frames of your favorite sunglasses. Since it’s so useful, I always make sure to keep some in my tackle box. The gel type keeps the longest and is what I prefer to use. I recently found out that superglue sets up a lot faster when wet and will dry within minutes if dusted with a little baking soda. So if you’re like me and don’t want to wait for it to dry, try dipping it in the water or dusting it with a little baking soda next time.
