TENNIS

In the winner take all match, it was Oakdale’s Breanna Morgan and Tayla Barry who won in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 over Sierra’s Angelica Villanueva and Mikayla Coburan. In singles action Tay Talamentes, Danika Brown and Madison Brewer were all victorious. The Lady Mustangs looked to add on to their winning ways as they hosted Central Catholic on Tuesday, Oct. 18, following The Leader’s press time. Oakdale finishes the regular season on the road against Manteca on Thursday, Oct. 20. The girls compete in the singles tournament at Manteca on Tuesday, Oct. 25 and doubles action is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 27. Tournament play begins at 9 a.m. both days.

VOLLEYBALL

Close to winning back-to-back Valley Oak League titles under second year head coach Heather Gonzales, the girls traveled to Tracy to face the Jaguars of Kimball on Wednesday, Oct. 12. This was the girls lone match of the week and they made the most of it. In a dramatic four game set, Oakdale escaped with a 3-1 road win. In a tough battle, Oakdale took the first set 25-14, before losing set number two 16-25. Gonzales regrouped her team and they won the next two sets 25-19, 25-18.

“Thursday’s match was a memorable match. It was full of great volleyball and high intensity,” said Gonzales. “I know I am speaking for myself and the rest of the team in saying thank you to all the fans, administration, parents that made the drive to root on the team.”

In the win Samantha Nickerson made a big impact as she tallied three blocks and eight kills for Oakdale. Makkena Ryan led the team in kills with nine and also added three blocks. Isabella Cobarruvias was the team leader in aces and assists with three aces and 27 digs.

“I am beyond proud of this team for their fight during this match. There was a time during the third set where we were down and the girls fought to come back and take it. The amount of heart the girls played with was exciting to me,” Gonzales said. “Our defense has been playing phenomenal all season and really stepped it up this match to allow our hitters to put away balls. I am so blessed to be able to coach such a phenomenal group of young women.”

Oakdale took on East Union on Monday, Oct. 17 following The Leader’s press time. Oakdale hosts Weston Ranch today, Wednesday Oct. 19.
