Three champions and the prestigious Most Outstanding Upperweight Wrestler honor came back to Oakdale from the weekend Lloyd C. Engel Tournament in neighboring Escalon.

Frankie Trent, at 170 pounds, was awarded the upperweight honors, going undefeated as he claimed first place for the Mustangs in the two-day tourney. Also placing first in their respective weight divisions were Logan Eaton and Nico Colunga.

Second place finishers for Oakdale included Cody Williams, Trevor Williams and Miguel Ibarra, with Tanner Reeves nailing down a third place showing.

There are no team scores kept in the Engel tourney, though wrestlers typically get in a number of matches in the preliminary rounds on Friday and the semifinal and championship bouts on Saturday.

“Many of our guys are gaining momentum which is critical during this part of the season,” said coach Steve Strange.

While some of the varsity was at Escalon, several other wrestlers headed to the Gordon Hay Invitational at Calaveras High School. Strange said the best showings there were a first place for Julian De La Rios, and fourth place honors for both Sam Angrole and Luke Pouncey.

Earlier in the week, the Oakdale varsity topped East Union 69-12 and Sierra 56-12 in a double dual meet, while the JV squad also claimed a pair of victories, 60-18 over East Union and a close 36-34 decision against Sierra.

“This week we have dual meets against Lathrop and Manteca, both are Wednesday night at Lathrop starting at 4 p.m.,” said Strange. “Friday and Saturday we travel to Temecula to compete in the Battle for the Belt Tournament. The event will feature 90 of the best teams from throughout California and Nevada.

“Temecula will be another good indicator of our team’s postseason potential, we are looking forward to a successful weekend.”
