Basketball’s Varsity Mustangs Net Pair Of Wins

It was a pair of victories for the Oakdale High School varsity boys basketball team this past week. The Mustangs handled Central Valley on Wednesday, Dec. 18 by a 62-33 margin and then earned an 86-65 road win over Merced on Friday night.

At home against Central Valley, Oakdale struggled in the first quarter as they only scored nine points, but scored 16 in the second to take a 25-16 halftime lead. The Mustangs came out of the locker room energized and scored 25 points in the third quarter to pull away from the visitors. Kobe Nunes scored a game high 24 points. Jonah Norman added a dozen and Jake Kettering scored 11.

Friday night’s game saw a heavy dose of Nunes and Norman. The two combined for a total of 66 of the team’s 86 points. Nunes scored 42 and Norman had 24 points in the road win. Michael Echavarria scored a dozen for Oakdale.

Coming up this week, the Mustangs will host the annual Oakdale Rotary Classic beginning on Dec. 26. Oakdale will play Davis at 8 p.m. and it will be Flannel Night; fans are encouraged to wear flannel to the game.

The junior varsity team, meanwhile, defeated Central Valley 61-20. Johnny Wylie scored a game high 22 points. Jacob Guignard scored 10 points. The junior varsity team will be hosting in the Oakdale Rotary Classic as well and will take on Davis in the first game with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26.

The freshman team earned a 67-31 victory over Central Valley behind Ian Geisler’s 15 points. All 13 active players for Oakdale scored for the youngest Mustang squad in the game.
